CHICAGO (AP) -- Attorney General Eric Holder has said he'll do what he can to make more money available for Chicago to fight street level violence.

Holder made the comment Monday during a brief speech at the swearing in of new U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon, who will serve in Chicago and northern Illinois.

Holder did not immediately offer details and did not mention a specific dollar figure. But he says he hopes money could help free up resources for local authorities, including having more beat police officers on Chicago streets.

Holder says cooperation between local, state and federal officials would be a key factor. And he added, "This is not the time for institutional friction." He says Fardon is well suited to foster greater cross agency cooperation.
