Haverhill police search for armed robber who fired shot inside store

Posted: Updated:

HAVERHILL, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Haverhill police are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of an armed robber who shot a gun inside a gas station Monday night.

Police say a masked man entered the Shell Gas and Convenience Store on South Main Street just after 6:30 p.m. and pointed a handgun at the female clerk. The robber demanded money from the register, saying, "This is not a joke." When the woman hesitated, the suspect fired a round from his pistol, which missed the clerk.

The suspect was able to flee with an undisclosed amount of cash. Investigators say the clerk was distraught, but not hurt.

The robber is described as a white man, between 30 and 40 years old, standing about 5'8" to 5'10" tall. He also had a tattoo on his left hand and wore a wedding ring. Police believe he might have scruffy facial hair.

At the time of the robbery, the man was wearing a dark colored Carhartt vest, faded blue jeans, and gray sneakers with white soles.

Officials say the robbery is similar to two that recently took place in Newburyport and Seabrook. They are working to determine if the robberies are connected.

Anyone with information is asked to call Haverhill Police Detective William O'Connell at 978-722-1553 or the Haverhill anonymous tip line at 978-373-1212 with prompt 1.
