Homeland Security Drill Conducted On Southland Oil Rig

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11 / CNS) A multi-agency Homeland Security Oil Platform Training Exercise will take place until noon. The exercise will be coordinated by the Naval Postgraduate School, and will be conducted on two oil platforms off the coast between Long Beach and Santa Catalina Island.

The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and the Los Angeles Police Department will be participants in the Offshore Platform Security Threat Awareness and Response Program (OPSTAR 13) maritime exercise along with many federal, state and local agencies. The OPSTAR 13 exercise is intended to explore the homeland security, homeland defense, emergency response, and emergency management issues presented by security threats to offshore oil and gas platforms in the Southern California region.

The scenario involves "tactical response capability to an incident involving armed intruders on an oil platform." Sheriff's personnel will demonstrate a tactical response, including "fast rope" deployment from a helicopter. Also, personnel in "surface fast boats" will be involved in the exercise.
