Monday Wrap: President's Fundraising In Los Angeles

Posted: Updated:

President Obama attended two fundraisers in Los Angeles Monday.  He canceled his last scheduled visit in October because of the crisis in Syria.

Interesting timing on this visit; on Mr. Obama's schedule, dinner with Israeli-American billionaire Haim Saban of Saban Capitol Group.  Saban is a well-known and vocal supporter of Israel.  Israel criticized the nuclear deal with Iran, questioning the value of easing sanctions without stronger demands.

Mr. Obama may have had an easier time at the home of Magic Johnson.  The former Laker great lives in the same exclusive neighborhood above Beverly Hills as Saban.  He hosted a fundraiser for Democratic candidates and we're told such luminaries as Diane Keaton and Samuel L. Jackson were among those willing to pay $2,500 to $15,000 for an audience with the president. In all, 80 people attended the Johnson event in a heated tent covering the tennis court.  Mr. Obama spoke for about 17 minutes to the supportive crowd  He complimented his host, saying that when Johnson was playing ball, he was known as a team player.  He lamented that in Washington the teams aren't playing together very well.  It's an interesting assignment covering the president's movements.

No one will give you the schedule, except in the most vague terms.  My crew and I were sent up to the area near the two gates for the neighborhood known as Beverly Park.  We were told that the streets would be shut down even before the Air Force One landed at LAX.  Instead, the shutdown came nearly two hours later.

Obama arrived late from San Francisco but that's not what delayed his arrival to Beverly Park.  He stopped in to the Beverly Hilton before his evening fundraisers to meet with the family of slain TSA agent Gerardo Hernandez and the two TSA agents who survived the LAX shooting.
