This years LA Auto Show is unveiling a number of new all electric cars available early in 2014. One attracting quite a bit of attention is the New Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive on display at this years auto show.
All electric cars are becoming more affordable, and more popular, in part due to a campaign to place 1 million electric vehicles on California roads in the next ten years. That is especially true here in California - which remains the king of hybrid & all electric cars.
I spent the day at the Los Angeles Auto Show Press Day last week in search of the greenest cars on the planet.
I selected four all-electric vehicles to blog about. Two new for 2014, the BMW i3 and Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive. I also looked at two late-model 2013 all-electric cars, the Fiat 500e and the Chevy Spark-EV.
For this Blog - we look at the new Mercedes Benz B-Class Electric Drive. Scheduled to hit local dealerships in mid-summer 2014.
Unlike the BMW i3, the new B-Class takes very little getting used to from an appearance stand point. It looks much like any other Mercedes both on the outside and inside. Of course what is under the hood is quite different.
The B-Class Electric Drive is powered by an emissions-free high-torque electric motor with an estimated range of around 115 miles with a top speed of 100 mph.
The lithium-ion battery is stored in what Mercedes-Benz calls the "Energy Space" in the vehicle's underfloor to allow for more interior space in the car.
Even cooler, like the BMW i3, the driver can access his vehicle through the internet, using a PC or smartphone to check the current charge status of the battery or to verify the vehicle's current range on a map.
I met up with Heiko Schmidt, Small Car Producer Manager for Mercedes Benz USA for an interview to talk about the Mercedes latest all-electric car.
I'll be blogging about the other two electric cars in the coming days. Will it be enough to get me to forget about another gas-powered vehicle?. We shall see.....
