Coroner: Surgeon died of strangulation

Posted: Updated:

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - A county coroner says that a surgeon found dead in Augusta died as a result of strangulation and blunt-force injuries.

Authorities say Dr. Charles Mann III was last seen in Barnwell, S.C., on Thursday. The 60-year-old doctor typically worked in Barnwell during the week and returned home to the central Georgia town of Kathleen on the weekends.

Police said his blue Honda Civic was found Friday in a wooded area of Augusta. His body was later recovered in the Spirit Creek area of Augusta.

Authorities have charged 22-year-old Glenn Vincent Riggs II with murder and robbery. Jail records do not list an attorney for Riggs.

Richmond County Coroner Grover Tuten tells the Augusta Chronicle that an autopsy was unable to determine an approximate time of death.
