The local nonprofit Forgotten Harvest helps thousands of metro-Detroit families put food on their tables every year. DTE Energy is sponsoring two gas electric, refrigerated trucks that allow the agency to bring food to people in need, while keeping down operating costs.

Forgotten Harvest hits the road with Fox 2 in the passenger seat. We're on board one of the nonprofit group's gas electric refrigerated trucks. There are three in the fleet and two are sponsored by the DTE Energy Foundation.

"Every year the truck provides 1.3 million pounds of food for people in need, and it's the good stuff. It's fresh meat, dairy, fruit, vegetables, baked goods - all the things that people need to stay healthy and strong," Susan Goodell, CEO of Forgotten Harvest, says.

The food rescue organization picks up surplus food and items that still have a few days left before the expiration date from grocery stores and other places that would otherwise throw it out. Volunteers help sort and pack the food at Forgotten Harvest's warehouse in Oak Park. It's then distributing to homeless shelters and social service agencies across metro Detroit.

"There are actually 720,000 people in the three counties living below the poverty line. These are families, seniors; children who were born into poverty," says Goodell.

She says the refrigerated hybrid trucks each cost $50,000 a year to operate. Having them helps more people and there are other benefits.

"By having an electric hybrid truck here you save thousands on operating cost," says Vince Dow of DTE Energy.

It says right on the trucks - they use 30 percent less fuel and that also cuts down on carbon emissions making them a greener ride.

In all, Forgotten Harvest provides 45 million meals a year for people in need and they always need volunteers.

"DTE is really proud to be part of this. Helping our community is essential to us," Dow adds.

It's a partnership that benefits both organizations and, most importantly, benefits the community. Generous donations, hard working volunteers and the resources to get the job done - just a few things to be thankful for.
