Neighbors along 7 Mile Road near Goulburn Avenue rushed to a little boy's rescue after he was hit by a car and was lying in the middle of the road. They sheltered his body, blocking other oncoming traffic, until other help arrived.

"I just heard - it happened so quick," Kierra Burton remembers. Witnesses say the 9-year-old was struck as he tried to cross the street. Burton tells Fox 2's Taryn Asher the boy "crossed the green light a little bit too fast and the baby was just laying out there. I just went out there to secure him."

Burton says she also called members of the Maintaining a Neighborhood (MAN) network. They communicate by walkey talkeys and patrol in their own cars to keep their neighborhood safe.

"I think it's good because we all came together ... we get that call out over our walkey talkeys and come to each other's aid," Ernestine Moore says, a fellow member of MAN.

The incident appears to have been an accident. The driver of the vehicle that is believed to have hit the boy did stop and was interviewed by police. The boy was rushed to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
