Armed suspects attack elderly couple in their home

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta police are searching for five masked, armed men who attacked an elderly couple inside their home early Tuesday.

Investigators say it happened at the couple's home on Lynhurst Drive in southwest Atlanta at around 4 a.m. All News 106.7's Carolyn Ryan says the elderly woman who lives in the home was in the bathroom when one of the suspects burst in carrying a pink gun.  She said he was wearing red sweat pants as well as a mask and a black scull cap on his head, and he told her if she came out of the bathroom or tried to use a cell phone to call for help, he would shoot her.

Crimestoppers has posted a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

The woman yelled for help to her husband and young grandson, who were also home at the time.  At one point, the boy ran into the bathroom with his grandmother.  According to investigators, the suspects roughed up the woman's husband, and got away with cash and jewelry.

The woman's husband told police that several men came into the bedroom where he was sleeping, and they were armed with guns.  They were wearing dark clothes and hoods over their faces.

Before the woman was surprised by the suspects, she told police she had been having trouble sleeping and was hearing noises.  She said she got up several times and noticed that her blinds looked like they had been moved.

Police say they are searching for between four and five suspects in the attack. Police took fingerprints from a TV the suspect tried to steal, but left behind in the back yard.

Anyone with information about the suspects in this case is asked to call the Atlanta Police Department.

Late Tuesday, Atlanta City Council member C.T. Martin issued this statement:

"It saddens me to learn of the very unfortunate act of violence towards an elderly couple in their home on Lynhurst Drive early this morning. This is a very serious matter, and obviously it deserves the full and complete attention of our police department. This is the time of year that our citizens, need to be very cognizant of their surroundings including their homes, cars and workplace. It is extremely regrettable that criminals pray on our most vulnerable, women and the elderly, particularly during the holiday season. Today I'm calling on the Atlanta Police Department to increase patrols with another layer of cars inside their normal beat of coverage. We must make criminals aware that we will not sit idly by and allow them to take over our communities. I want to echo the ongoing appeal of our police department to citizens that ‘if you see something, say something. Report all suspicious activity in your neighborhood.'

"Again, it is my intent to work with the police department to help put an end to these absurd acts of violence." – Atlanta City Councilmember C.T. Martin
