Victim in high-profile molestation case speaks about ordeal

Posted: Updated:

A victim in a high profile child molestation case says he wants parents to learn a valuable lesson from his painful ordeal.

Brandon Burton was in court Monday when DragonCon co-founder Ed Kramer entered guilty pleas to avoid a trial with his three victims.

Burton said he was only 13 years old when Kramer molested him the first time during the DragonCon convention in 2000.

Burton said that Kramer seemed like a loving father figure and he hopes single parents will listen to his story.

"I still have the nights where, you know, it haunts me," Burton said.

Kramer was dating Burton's mother when he allegedly starting molesting Burton and his brother. The boys were in their early teens. Burton said that Kramer molested him the first time in a hotel in 2000. He said the crimes continued for months.

"I didn't know where to go, I didn't who to trust me or who would believe me because I didn't believe it myself for a long time," Burton said.

Burton said Kramer's guilty plea helps bring closure to the ordeal. Kramer, 52, will spend 34 months under house arrest after pleading guilty on Monday.

"After 13 years of denying it, that was nice," said Burton. "It doesn't make up for it, but it's a step towards closure."

Burton wants to share his story, hoping it may compel other young boys who've been victims of abuse to come forward. He also hopes single parents will do background checks on people they bring around their children.

"If my mother would have done a background check on Ed, she would have known he just got charges dropped for child molestation," Burton said.

Burton, now a father and Army veteran is engaged and has another child on the way. He said that parents should constantly remind  their children -- especially their young sons – that it's okay to  speak up if someone touches them in a sexually inappropriate manner.

"Pry a little bit and, as parents, keep an eye on your kids and if stuff seems suspicious, it probably is," Burton said.

Burton says he and his brother are pleased with the 34 months that Kramer must spend under house arrest. Kramer must also register as a sex offender and spend 20 years on probation.
