Gwinnett youth detention center to close next year

Posted: Updated:

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice plans to close its youth detention center in Gwinnett County next year.

Department Commissioner Avery Niles announced Thursday that the Regional Youth Detention Center in Lawrenceville will close in June.

He says department officials decided to close the facility because of rising maintenance costs associated with the building's age.

The facility was built about 30 years ago to house 49 young offenders, 38 males and 11 females. It frequently holds offenders who are awaiting placement in a special treatment program, or placement in a long-term youth development center.

When the Gwinnett facility is closed, young offenders in the area will be sent to detention centers in Rockdale and Hall counties.
