12,000 pound steel beam kills worker in East Boston

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A person was killed near the shipyard in East Boston Monday evening in an industrial accident, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

A call came in at about 6:15 p.m. on Monday to respond  to an industrial accident at 256 Marginal St. in East Boston, fire official Steve MacDonald said.

Preliminary information released by the District Attorney's office found that a 12,000 pound beam fell and struck a man at Boston Bridge and Steel.

Family members told the Boston Globe the victim was 46-year-old Marco Antonio Huezo Mancea of El Salvador.

Just after 8:30 p.m. Monday night, Massachusetts State Police tweeted about the fatality, adding that state police, Boston fire officials and Suffolk County detectives were on the scene.

This marks the second fatal industrial incident in Boston in the last five days. Last Thursday, a construction worker was killed by a scissor lift after an incident at Downtown Crossing.
