Winter fashion trends: how to shimmer and shine

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Want to shimmer and shine for the holidays without looking like a Christmas ornament? That can be a challenge, but with the help of Jill Pohl from Dots it can be done.

Jill has the following tips for your holiday fashion.

1.   Daytime Shine
-    Sequins aren't just for nighttime; you can be festive and fun during the day
-    Layering is key to help keep the look casual
-    Pick one item to stand out, such as a simple sequin top, and add a cardigan, boots and jeans
-    Since the top is your statement, avoid a flashy necklace. Instead opt for a soft pair of sparkly earrings to complement the top.

2.   Subtle Shine
-    Great for those who like the festive look of shimmer and shine, but don't want all over glitz
-    Opt for winter weather accessories with sparkles and sequins such as hats, scarves and even embellished boots
-     You can also opt for makeup (eye shadow, nail polish) that has a sparkle to it

3. Holiday Party Perfect
-    Select a stand-out sparkly top that's more on the dressy side
-    Pair with skinny black jeans to let your blouse be the star
-    Sparkly earrings will help sustain your shine; no real need for a necklace
-    Opt for sparkly details such as glitter nail polish to intensify your shine
-    This look is great for Xmas gatherings, work parties, etc.

4.  Nighttime Glitz and Glam
-    This look has New Year's Eve written all over it
-    Bling is the new black; opt for color and shine
-    Select an embellished dress and make it shine even more with heels and an embellished clutch
-    Sparkly tights are also a great way to style shiny and warm
-    Make your makeup work!  Opt for glitter eye shadow to enhance your shine
