Managing holiday stress

ATLANTA, Ga. -

The shopping, the crowds, the parties - they're all signs of the season. For many, all this holiday hullabaloo is stressful. Evan Katz is a metro Atlanta therapist who says this time of the year can bring up various feelings.

"Particularly people who are going to have a party, they can get really stressed out because the expectation is way overboard. The concern that other people are going to look at it and say, well, this is no good" Katz says. 

And for those of us trying to find the perfect gifts for family and friends, shopping can cause anxiety. "It reminds us, most of us that we never have as much money as we want" Katz remarked. 

In addition, there are people who can't be with loved ones, which can cause depression.

So what can we do to manage this holiday tension? Katz says your first step is preparing. Whether it be a budget for gifts or deciding how much time you'll give to family, then try to stick with your plan.

If you tend to feel lonely this time of year, Katz says get out of yourself. He recommends you call somebody else that might be kind of bummed. Offer a little advice. Just make someone else feel good.

And lastly, Katz says we should let go of perfection and high expectations.

Katz also warns against drinking too much during the holiday - especially at family gatherings, where the feelings can get intense.
