Detroit seeks to improve counting of bus fares

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -

Detroit plans to hire an armored car company to handle the daily collection of bus-fare revenue as part of an effort to improve handling of cash that averages $1.2 million a month and cut costs, officials said.

The restructuring team of state-appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr's plans to award a contract to Total Armored Car Services within two weeks to collect and count cash from the Detroit Department of Transportation's fleet, The Detroit News reported.

Orr spokesman Bill Nowling said the contract is part of an overhaul of city services as Orr restructures operations while the city is in bankruptcy court.

Plans call for scrapping the current cash-counting system.

Gary Brown, the city's chief restructuring officer, says the armored car company will pick up bus fare revenue at two bus terminals once a day. He said cash will be transferred from each bus to a lock box, an improvement on security from the current system.

"There literally is a room where employees sit around a table and just count money. It wasn't well organized," said Gary Brown, the city's chief restructuring officer. "There was money on the floor, and in bags, and the money's been there a couple weeks."

The city spends almost $923,000 a year for collecting and counting DDOT fare revenue, the newspaper reported. Total Armored Car Services said it could do the work for $661,000, Brown said, and the work is expected to be added to an existing contract with the company.
