Lawrence Tech fraternity hosts bone marrow registry drive to save little girl's life

(WJBK) -

Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer, according to bethematch.org.

The fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon hosted a bone marrow registry drive Tuesday at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield. The drive was in honor of a little 10-year-old girl from the Grand Rapids area, Bree Town, who needs a bone marrow transplant to survive.

The drive was organized by LTU student Brean Bush who is from the same town as Bree. Brean and her brother, who is in the fraternity, teamed up to bring the Be the Match registry drive to campus.

Any student who participated in the drive could be a potential match not only for Bree but also for any person needing a bone marrow transplant worldwide. The testing process was a simple swab of the inner cheek.

"It feels good to help people," says 10-year-old Bree, the little girl with the really big heart.

"She's just, got this light and it shines," Bree's mom, Jenny Town, says.

She spent years donating gifts to kids at DeVos Children's Hospital, even as Bree herself was fighting leukemia.

Last Christmas, a priceless gift - she was in remission. But just before this Thanksgiving came the tragic news that her blood cancer was back.

"She got some leg pain in August, and we started coming back here to find out what it was," Jenny says. "There was leukemia cells in her bone marrow."

Now Bree is in isolation undergoing intense chemotherapy and without a bone marrow transplant she won't survive, but no family members are a match.

"There shouldn't be a child who needs a match and then there isn't one," Jenny says. "If people join the registry, maybe save some body's life, not necessarily Bree, but anybody's, that would be great."
