Harlem football player aims for Super Bowl

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

For 10-year-old Khordae Sydnor, football is not just a hobby, it's a calling.

"First I saw a bunch of kids playing football and i just wanted to join and I got hooked after that," Khordae said. "I just love it so much, I just keep on thinking about it and I never take my mind off football."

As quarterback for the Harlem Jets, Khordae, an honors student at the Harlem Children's Zone Promise Academy II, has racked up MVP awards and championship trophies. But he has also found the game to be a refuge from the often tough streets of his Harlem neighborhood.

"It's kind of bad," he said of the neighborhood. "Sometimes there's shootings and lockdowns [at school]."

And the field has been a place to turn when things at home got tough.

"His mother left for a year and moved to Atlanta," said dad Tracey Sydnor, who has raised Khordae and Khordae's younger brother Brandon as a single parent. "He started to lose focus, he fell back on his homework, I used football to keep him focused."

This fall Khordae helped lead the Harlem Jets to a win in the Super Bowl of their league.

Now he may get the chance to go to the real Super Bowl, thanks to a video his dad submitted to the NFL's "Together we make football" contest.

Just days later, they got a call telling them that of 5,000 submissions, Khordae's video had been selected as a top 10 finalist.

"I was running around the house, screaming, yelling, picking up my little brother and celebrating," Khordae said of getting the news.

Now it's up to a popular vote. Of the 10 finalists Khordae is one of three kids and the only New Yorker. He has the backing of his friends and teammates.

"He deserves to win because I've noticed a lot of great stuff about him," said fellow Harlem Jet Evan Archer.

"He's a good kid, he does good in school, and he's going to be the next Cam Newton," teammate Qaizhe Scott added.

Now he just needs the public to get behind him. Five of the 10 finalists will win tickets to Super Bowl 48.

"I want to go to the Super Bowl so badly because I want to see the live action and have the experience to go," Khordae said.

Voting is open until December 23:
