BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officials said they didn't find any significant issues during inspections of third rails this week.
MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott called for inspections of third rails on the blue, red and orange lines after cracked third rails at JFK/UMass station caused massive delays for commuters earlier this week.
Officials said the one- to two-inch gaps found Tuesday and Wednesday in the third rails were detected by power department dispatchers.
Third rails provide electricity to the trains, so they were not able to run until the rails were repaired.
Inspectors checked the welding on similar third rails to make sure cold temperatures coming our way don't disrupt next week's commute.
