Movie Critic Matt Atchity: Exciting Weekend At The Movies

If you listen to the critics, there are a lot of really good movies hitting theaters this weekend. Matt Atchity talked about everything from Hobbits to Mary Poppins Friday morning on Good Day LA.

The second installment of "The Hobbit" opens everywhere and Matt says the reviews are solid...but fans of the book may not like what they see on screen.

"This movie is very exciting, there's lot of action, the critics like this one better but I didn't care for it that much. I'm a little disappointed. I love The Lord of the Rings, I'm a big fan of these books, I'm a bit of a purist so I felt like there's a little bit too much crammed in here but I think plenty of people are going to like this."

The director of "Silver Linings Playbook" and "The Fighter" brings back some of the cast from both movies for his latest film, "American Hustle". Matt says it's fantastic.

"This movie is very exciting, it's very funny...it's a great period piece...it feels closer to Goodfellas or Casino in a very good way. I really like this movie, the critics love it. 97% on the Tomatometer. Certified fresh. And again, this is an absolute must see."

Oscar winners Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson join forces to tell the story about the behind the scenes drama in making Mary Poppins in "Saving Mr. Banks". Critics are also loving this one but as with most "based on a true story" type of films, they say take this one with a grain of salt to enjoy the spoonful of sugar.

"There's a bit of backlash happening because this movie takes great liberties with the reality of what happened. This is the kind of movie you look at and say 'you know, they're not going to let the truth get in the way of a great story'. So you kind of have to check your knowledge at the door and if you can do that, this is a really great, really fun, very emotional movie."

Matt Atchity is the editor in chief for the pop-culture website "Rotten Tomatoes." He also hosts a new show on Sirius XM called "Rotten Tomatoes Radio."

The weekly one hour call in show airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
