CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An 80-year-old man died Friday after he was struck by a van in the Lake View neighborhood Thursday morning on the North Side.

Witnesses told police Jamie Ramirez ran into traffic against the traffic signal, not at a cross walk, about 8:45 a.m. Thursday in the 3000 block of North Ashland Avenue, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

A 50-year-old man driving northbound on Ashland in a 2006 Kia van attempted to stop the vehicle, but didn't, and struck the pedestrian, police said. The driver, who was the only person in the car, was not injured.

Ramirez, of the 8000 block of South Western Avenue, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died Friday at 8:38 p.m., the medical examiner's office said.

No citations have been issued as of Saturday morning as Area North detectives investigate.
