Could Speeding Cameras Make Roosevelt Boulevard Safer?

With two of the country's most dangerous intersections, and 12 other miles that are often deadly, the Roosevelt Boulevard can be a real scare for drivers.

So, can it be made safer? A local lawmaker says yes.

If you've ever driven on the Boulevard, chances are you've noticed the red-light cameras at some of the more dangerous intersections.

Now, State Sen. Mike Stack wants to have new cameras installed to deter drivers from speeding.

Stack says the cameras would use speed-sensing equipment, similar to radar, and take pictures of the drivers.

Speeding tickets would be issued, but Stack says they would not add points on a person's license.

"We're not trying to fine the whole world. We're only trying to fine people that are going at an excessive rate of speed, but mostly it's for a deterrent," Stack said. "We keep claiming we're a world-class city. But if we have a Daytona 500 going up right through the middle of it, how can we be a world-class city?"

The state senator says he would prefer to add more police patrols. But, right now, he hopes the technology will help.

Stack plans on introducing the speed camera legislation in Harrisburg.
