BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A member of a violent street gang was found guilty Tuesday of first-degree murder in the 2012 shooting death of 24-year-old Anthony Depina, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.
Depina was shot in the head and chest outside a Roxbury bar on Feb. 23, 2012 by his one-time friend Jason Barbosa. Barbosa was convicted after eight days of trial and two days of jury deliberations.
He will be sentenced on Wednesday morning and faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Though the two were friends for years, according to the District Attorney Daniel Conley, Barbosa and Depina became rivals, leading to the final deadly confrontation.
"This defendant has been on the fringes or in the thick of numerous shootings and homicides," Conley said in a statement. "He has for years been a driving force in the violence afflicting Boston's Cape Verdean community, and the city is safer now with him off the street."
