Shot Fired As Gun-Toting Bandit Robs Local Bar

PHILADELPHIA -

Surveillance cameras are everywhere at the Whispers Inn bar in West Oak Lane. And they were all rolling as a gun-toting bandit walked into the place and robbed it Wednesday during the lunch hour.

"He goes in both cash registers and helps himself," said Lt. George McClay, of Northwest Detectives.

"We got plenty of cameras, so don't nobody come back and try something stupid like that ever again. Please," bar manager Betty Kittrell told FOX 29 News.

The bandit demanded money and went behind the bar as startled customers looked on. The bartender complied with his request. Cameras over the cash registers caught the gunman with a fist full of cash and the cocked handgun.

As he emptied a second register, the gun suddenly went off and the bartender hit the floor.

"She was so nervous she didn't know what to do. She just fell to the floor," Kittrell said. "She was very lucky, very lucky."

"The gun accidentally goes off. Luckily enough, nobody gets hit. There's two women standing right there," McClay added.

Unfazed, the gunman headed for the door. As he passed one patron on the way out, she, too, hit the floor, worried for her own safety.

"Could have been more than just a robbery. We could have had someone dead here," McClay explained.

"He could have hurt anybody in here. Anybody could have been shot," Kittrell said.

Police say the gunman actually came into the bar earlier and ordered a drink. Then, a few minutes later, he pulled off the robbery.

"You could see him procrastinating, just pacing, 'Should I do it now? Do it later,'" Kittrell added.

"This guy's from the neighborhood, he's comfortable enough to go in, sit down, order a drink. He's from somewhere very close," MClay said.

The gunman got away with about $500. Detectives say he may be from the neighborhood. If you have any information you can call Northwest Detectives, FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reported.
