De Blasio's daughter talks about depression, substance abuse

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio's teenage daughter, Chiara de Blasio, posted a video to You Tube on Christmas Eve about her battle with depression and substance abuse.

"I've had clinical depression for my entire adolescence. It made it easier, the more I drank and did drugs, to share some common ground with people I wouldn't' have. It didn't start out as a huge thing for me but it became a huge thing for me. When I went away to college... I just thought all my problems would go away if I just got on a plane and flew 3,000 miles," said de Blasio.

The 19-year-old goes on to say her therapist referred her to an out patient treatment center in New York City where she worked with other people around her age dealing with depression and anxiety. She says she wanted to encourage others to seek help.

"Removing substances from life opened so many doors for me. I was able to participate in my dad's campaign and that was the greatest thing ever. It's important for people to realize if you're suffering, if you're dealing with mental illness... getting sober is always a positive thing."

The video ends with the message: "If you think you have a problem, don't wait. Ask for help."

The future is here when it comes to vehicles. The auto industry has packed nearly 1,000 automobiles into the Jacob Javits Center on Manhattan's West Side for the 2014 NY Auto Show.   Among the 'must-sees' is a hydrogen-powered vehicle and a prototype with cameras that allow you to see the ground underneath as you drive over it.
