City leader calls for Mayor Menino to remove his name from signs

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- An at-large city councilor is calling for Mayor Tom Menino to use what is left in his campaign war chest to remove his name from signs in the city.

Michael Flaherty told the Boston Herald that the outgoing mayor should use the $414,000 in unused campaign funds to cover the cost of replacing the nearly 2,000 signs around the city that feature his name. Flaherty lost to Menino in the 2009 mayoral race.

A spokesperson for the mayor told the newspaper they aren't even considering the suggestion and that he has not decided what to do with the leftover cash.

Mayor-elect Marty Walsh told the Herald he has no plans to update the signs anytime soon and it's "not a priority at all" for him, saying that it is fine if the longtime mayor's name stays up for a couple of years.
