How to prepare your car for winter weather

Posted: Updated:

Emergencies happen. Be prepared! Keep the following items in your car so you can either fix the problem or be better able to wait until help arrives.

1. Bag of salt or kitty litter
2. First Aid Kit
3. Flashlight
4. Ice scraper and snow brush
5. Windshield wiper fluid
6. Basic tool kit
7. Battery jump box and jumper cables
8. Non-perishable food
9. Bottles of water
10. Blanket, gloves/mittens, warm coat and hat

Preventative steps to lessen the likelihood of breakdowns:
1. Take your car in for a pre-winter inspection (discussed last month)
2. Keep your eye on your fuel level - don't run out of gas!

What to do if your car breaks down:
1. Get off the road and onto the shoulder!
2. Do you need to call for help or can your fix it yourself? Ladies, know how to change a tire! If you don't know how, stop at Mufflers and More for a free lesson!
3. Use the emergency number on your AAA card (or emergency card from your auto insurance provider). Check it now to make sure it's handy - don't wait to look for it at the time of an emergency.

What to do if your car gets stuck in deep snow:
1. Do not spin your wheels!
2. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.
3. Use the shovel to clear away some of the snow from the wheels and the underside of the car. Use the kitty litter or salt to provide some traction.
4. Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner's manual first to make sure your transmission an handle that.)
5.  Use a light touch on the gas; don't "gun" it.

Avoid the potential problem altogether! If the road conditions are truly dangerous, do you need to go out at all? If the trip is not absolutely necessary, rearrange your schedule and make that trip another time.
