Novi construction worker trapped, rescued after trench collapses on him

A trench collapsed on a construction worker in Novi Friday morning. Rescue crews were able to pull him out in time and transport him to the hospital.

The worker was transported from Novi to Botsford Hospital, where the nearest level-two trauma center was located. The worker is said to not be dealing with any life-threatening injuries but he was in bad condition. Meanwhile the investigation continues into how the accident happened.

SkyFox captured the moments after a 48-year-old worker was rescued from the trench. It happened at a home in Novi near Beck Road around 11 a.m. Friday.

"There was several contracting companies here and they were working to install pipe, and there was a trench and it gave way," says Jeff Johnson, Director of EMS and Fire Operations for the city of Novi.

Fellow workers jumped in with shovels to free the worker. Novi EMS and fire arrived within minutes and finished the rescue. We're told the worker was having trouble breathing.

A MIOSHA investigator was on the scene less than an hour after the accident happened, taking pictures trying to determine whether the workers followed proper safety protocols.

Neither the homeowner nor the workers were willing to talk about the accident.

MIOSHA is investigating the accident and the investigation could take weeks before we learn exactly how this happened.
