First Night celebration to go forward in Boston

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) - Boston is gearing up for its annual First Night celebration.

The future of the city's New Year's Eve bash had been in doubt after its founding organization ran out of money and closed down earlier this year.

But Mayor Thomas Menino vowed the show would go on and the Highland Street Foundation stepped in along with several other sponsors to make sure that happened.

Tuesday night's festivities include art, music, dance, ice sculpture and midnight fireworks.

Outdoor events are free but a $10 First Night button is needed for indoor events.

The MBTA is offering free service after 8 p.m. for First Night revelers but make sure you have warm clothing: Forecasts call for temperatures to dip as low as the single digits in Boston on Tuesday night.
