De Blasio names Farina new schools chancellor

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Carmen Farina- a former teacher, principal and superintendent-  was named the next New York City schools chancellor on Monday.

Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio selected Carmen Farina, 70,  a long-time ally and Democrat, to lead the nation's largest public school system with 1.2 million students.

The official announcement was made at the William Alexander Middle School in Brooklyn where de Blasio's children once attended classes.

Farina faces several challenges right off the bat including a new set of academic standards and negotiating a contract with the teachers' union.

"This is such a privilege, to come back to a system where there is so much left to be done," said Farina.

The daughter of Spanish immigrants credits her father for helping her to forge a career in education.
