Smoking ban adopted in Boston parks effective immediately

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A smoking ban in all of Boston's park properties was voted on and approved Monday, and goes into effect immediately.

The Boston Parks and Recreation Commission voted unanimously to approve the ban, which was proposed by Mayor Thomas Menino, and approved by Boston City Council members Nov. 20.

The new ordinance prohibits smoking of tobacco, marijuana or any other materials on parks and public spaces that are controlled by the city's Parks and Recreation department.

The measure is enforceable by both Boston police officers and park rangers, and is punishable by a fine of $250 per violation.

"This amendment is necessary to maintain the health and safety of our public parks and ensure that these valuable resources can be enjoyed by all Boston residents," wrote Mayor Menino in a letter.
