Uber app: A luxury that'll cost you, especially on New Year's

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The forecast for New Year's Eve is cold. So if you need a ride to wherever you're going the Uber app can help you out. Some love it while others say the Uber car service is uber-expensive.

If you want to use the Uber on-demand car service app you have to sign up and give your credit card number. The company does not deal in cash. Uber's website advertises that you can "make it a night out" and "arrive in style." But the price is giving some customers sticker shock.

It all comes down to supply and demand. The more demand, the higher the prices go. In fact, your fare could be 7 to 10 times more during peak periods such as New Year's Eve or when it's raining and you can't find a yellow cab anywhere.

Some have complained on Twitter "basically, Uber will be most expensive when people need it the most. The nerve of those dirty capitalists."

But this one supports Uber saying "complaining about Uber's prices is like complaining about Armani's prices."

Josh Mohrer, the general manager for Uber in New York, spoke to Fox 5 via Skype. He said that riding between 12 and 3 a.m. on New Year's will cost you, but that it is a reliable ride whenever you need it. He said that Uber promises that with a push of a button a car will pick you up in 5 minutes.

The bottom line: it's a luxury and luxury costs money.
