Fatal multi-car collision in Norwood

CANTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- One person is dead and two are critically injured after a seven-car crash on I-95 in Norwood.

The crash happened around 2:09 a.m. Wednesday on the northbound side of the highway. One car hit the guardrail and spun around, facing oncoming traffic. Three other collisions then happened in the same spot in a chain reaction, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Milton J. McCarthy, 23, of Dorchester was driving an Audi that hit the guardrail. He suffered serious injuries when his car was then hit by another. He was taken to Boston Medical Center and is in critical condition. A passenger in the Audi with McCarthy was identified as Kendell R. Thomson, 25, of Boston.

A Cadillac was part of the accident and operated by Haralambos Kosmidis, 75, of Jamaica Plain. He was transported to Norwood Hospital. Elpida Kosmidis, 68, of Jamaica Plain was a passenger and taken to Boston MedicalCenter. Georgios Pantekidis, 78, of Jamaica Plain, also a passenger, was transported to Norwood Hospital. The fourth passenger in the Cadillac, Elefthria Pantekidis, 71, of Jamaica Plain, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at Norwood Hospital.

A Buick involved in the crash was operated by Berardino M. Santeusanio Jr., 55, of Billerica. A Lincoln involved in the wreck was driven by Paul F. Redmond, 62, of Dorchester. His passenger was identified as Zachary M. Zinger, 24, of Brooklyn, New York.

A Nissan Altima involved in the accident was driven by Arnaldo R. Lopes, 32, of Brockton. His passengers were identified as Samoel G. Antunes, 23 of Brockton and Patrick R. Goncalves, 22, of Brockton. The Subaru involved in the crash was operated by Ronald A. Gonzalez, 53, of Hyde Park and the Kia was operated by Stacey Bourlos, 20, of Foxborough.

The road was closed for hours between Coney and Neponset streets, and traffic was diverted to Route 1 until around 6 a.m. when police cleared the scene and reopened the interstate.

The accident remains under investigation.
