Church Leader Says He Made Call To Post All Of Monsignor's Bail

PHILADELPHIA -

The leader of Philadelphia's Catholic Church says he was the one who made the call to post all of the $25,000 bail for Monsignor William Lynn.

Archbishop Charles Chaput, in a letter to the faithful released Friday, writes Lynn "poses no flight risk or danger to anyone."

Chaput argues the $25,000 was not taken from a parish, school or ministry resource.

Lynn is free following an 18-month stay in state prison in connection to a priest-abuse scandal.

Lynn is being monitored by an electronic bracelet while prosecutors challenge an appeals court's ruling to overturn his conviction.

Lynn had been charged with felony child endangerment, accused of covering up the abuse of another priest, but the court ruled the law that existed at the time did not cover people who don't directly supervise children.

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams, a Catholic, has been sharply critical of the archdiocese for bailing out Lynn.
