Airline troubles could take days to resolve

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Airlines expected more cancellations Monday as an influx of holiday travelers tried to return home after winter weather grounded many flights last week.

Massport says most of the delays at Logan International Airport were on flights out of Terminal C, that is where JetBlue and some United Airlines flights are based.

JetBlue released a statement Monday morning, saying that delays and cancellations from last week's storm displaced some planes and crews. The airline says they have been working to bring crews and planes back into position and resume regular operations, but "further cancellations are still occurring as crews exceed their allowed duty times."

JetBlue is just one airline hit the hardest as both of its primary northeast hubs, Logan and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, were crippled by the nor'easter last week. The airline canceled 20 flights through 10 a.m. Monday and they expect it will take days to get back on schedule.

American Airlines, Delta, and others were also canceling some flights out of Boston or were reporting flight departures with significant delays.

Officials blamed a combination of regular holiday travel, winter weather, and new rules limiting pilots' flying time for the delays.

Additionally, some flights at Logan were affected by a temporary suspension of operations at JFK Sunday morning, caused by icy runways. A plane coming from Toronto slid into the snow off the runway after landing because of the slick conditions.

Travelers were encouraged to call their airlines or go online to check the status of their flight.
