Dense fog blankets NYC area

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - It was a slow go on the roads around the New York City area on Monday with dense fog reducing visibility in many spots to less than one mile.

The FOX 5 weather team says the fog formed with warm air over the cold snow.  It is created when the difference between the temperature and the dew point is four degrees or less.

The George Washington Bridge was not visible from either side of  the Hudson River for a portion of the morning commute.

The fog contributed to extensive delays at the Hudson River crossing on the first day of the first full week of 2014.

It is best to use your vehicle's fog lights instead of high beams when driving in foggy conditions.

The temperature was in the low 50s on Monday morning with rain and wind in the forecast.  Things were expected to take a nose dive later Monday afternoon and into Tuesday.

The high is expected to reach 12 degrees on Tuesday.
