Gina's People: Cancer Helper

Posted: Updated:

This week in Gina's People, we have a FOX 11 viewer from Northridge who volunteers her time helping the sick. Jeannie Starret says, "It's my passion. It's my heart. It's my soul. It's what I do."

Jeannie is a twice cancer survivor. She says she was able to beat the disease with the help and support she received from family and friends. Jeannie realizes not  everyone has the kind of support that is needed to pull through a horrible illness. Without it she says, "You can easily take yourself to the worst scenario especially at night alone in the dark when everyone else is asleep."  Jeannie makes sure others aren't alone. She shows up with food, good conversation and always ready to listen. This is her message to the world, "Be the change you want to see. If you want the world to be a better place for your children and the people you share your space with, then step up and do what it takes to help people in need."

If you know people like Jeannie making a difference, email us. Every Monday, we recognize those FOX 11 Viewers who go above and beyond their call of duty.

Hell on earth, that's how some doctors describe Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa also known as E.B. It's a horrible genetic disease that Nicky Zahorcak was born with. A lot of his skin is raw, the slightest touch can cause blisters that quickly spread. He says, "Right now, all the bandages that you see everywhere even on my sides, they're all raw skin." His mother Silvia says very few people know about this rare condition and she wants to change that.
