Protecting kids from cold

The problem today isn't just the cold: it's the wind. It draws heat away from our skin. That combination can be risky for children, who have thinner skin.

That's why experts are asking parents to make sure kids are protected before they head outside.

Dr. Jim Fortenberry of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, recommends protecting kids from the extreme weather.

"They lose significantly more heat across their skin that's why it's important to add those extra layers and to think of them a little different than you would think of yourself. If you're cold, you're child is even more cold." Fortenberry says.

Dr. Fortenberry recommends layers: shoot for a layer to wick sweat from the skin, a middle layer or two to hold the heat in, and on outer layer to keep out the cold.

"If your child has to go out, if the child is going back to school, you want to use layers, you can use multiple thin layers, and make sure you cover up the head, with a hat, because that is where a child is using most of their heat" Fortenberry adds. Mittens and warm socks are also advised. Try to cover up as much skin as possible.

He recommends keeping kids close to home - but if they want out makes sure they're coming inside every few minutes for warm up breaks.

If your child is shivering, that's a sign - it's time to go back inside and get warm.

At night, we tend to want to wrap the baby in blankets.

Dr. Fortenberry says try not to have loose blankets or pillows in the crib. The layers can block the baby's breathing.

Instead he recommends using a sleeper suit or a blanket wrapped securely around the baby's lower body.
