Police make arrest in case of disabled man beaten with own cane

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Transit police have arrested a man who they say robbed a disabled man of his cane and then beat him with it.

Miquel Velasquez, 20, of Dorchester, was arrested for unarmed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon of a disabled person.

The assault happened on Saturday at around 11 p.m. in the Andrew Square MBTA station stop.

On Monday, police released surveillance video of the attack, and of Velasquez walking down the station steps with a woman.

The Boston Globe identified the victim as 44-year-old Christopher Johnson, who said he was not seriously hurt but was shocked that two bystanders did nothing to help.

Transit officers said the widespread attention the attack got "generated vast publicity," which helped identify Velasquez.

Velasquez will be arraigned Wednesday in South Boston District court.
