Manhattan's Animal Medical Center is always open to help

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

This hospital waiting room on East 62nd Street in Manhattan is bustling this afternoon with pets.

Welcome to the Animal Medical Center, a nonprofit hospital where your pet could get anything from physical therapy to a more involved procedures likes cat scans, dialysis and even surgery.

Sally Hodder brought her golden retriever, Lucy, to the ER because her back legs gave out.

"There are bad illnesses that people get that dogs get that there's really no effective therapy, but what you have to know is that you did everything possible."

The animals enter on the second floor and go into triage to determine the severity of their case.

Maury, a Cockapoo, was brought in earlier this week with a torn ligament. He had surgery.

But that is not the most common problem Dr. Bryan Gelman has seen in the ER.

"In New York City a lot of these animals especially dogs when they go on walks, they pick up things off the street," Gelman said. "We do see a lot of toxicity we see a lot of traumas whether it's unfortunately they get hit by a car when they're walking or they get lose on a leash, or an altercation with a housemate or a friend, another dog, dog bite type of thing."

The Animal Medical Center is open 24 hours a day and treats all types of pets. One time doctors even treated a 250-pound pig from Brooklyn.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
