Firefighter saves dog trapped on frozen pond

BOURNE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A lieutenant from the Bourne Fire Department saved a dog trapped on Queen Sewell Pond Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to Queen Sewell Pond around 12:37 p.m. Wednesday to help a dog, named Ruby, who was trapped on the ice. Upon arrival, a fire lieutenant put on a suit designed to protect him from the elements and went to get Ruby, officials say. The dog was about 40 yards from the shore on part of the ice that had broken from the weight of the animal.

The lieutenant was tethered to shore once he reached Ruby, who was showing signs of distress. Both were pulled safely to shore. The rescue took about eight minutes.

Lt. Dana Dupuis said, "Ruby was not happy once the rope got tied around her midsection, she was a little upset. But before that she wanted help."

Ruby's owner was standing by waiting for her as she was rescued, and the dog was taken to the vet for an exam.

A witness at the scene, Ann Olim Bruni, said she doubts that Ruby will go near the ice again.
