BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- MIT police are honoring fallen Officer Sean Collier by helping young recruits follow in his footsteps.
MIT police have established the Officer Sean Collier Self Sponsor Scholarship. Each year, the fund will help send one self-sponsored recruit through the Lowell Police Academy as a student officer, much like the path Collier himself took. June 2 will mark the inauguration of the scholarship.
Along with the fund, the recruit will receive a special MIT patch in Collier's memory.
Scholarship applications are due Jan. 24.

The scholarship committee will narrow applications based on those requirements. Finalists will be interviewed by the scholarship committee.

Officer Collier was fatally shot while sitting inside his cruiser on April 18, 2013. Investigators accuse the alleged Boston Marathon bombers in Collier's slaying.
