Vanessa Hudgens stops by Good Day

ATLANTA -

Vanessa Hudgens stopped by Good Day Atlanta to chat with Karen Graham about her new film, Gimmie Shelter, which chronicles the story of a young homeless, pregnant teenager.

The film, which also stars James Earl Jones, Rosario Dawson and Brendan Fraser, is a break from Hudgens' normal roles. During her interview, Hudgens says she knew she wanted the role as soon as she read the script.

"I went to the audition as the character. I knew I wanted that role," said Hudgens.

According to Hudgens, the director didn't want to cast a "Hollywood type," so she set out on a quest to prove she was "worth her salt." The director sent her audition tape to the shelter being portrayed in the film and the women unanimously chose her tape for the role.

To prepare for the role, Hudgens lived at a shelter for two weeks and said she tried to dig "deep and dark" to morph into the character. While filming, Hudges says she changed and that "sometimes you have to go to the darkest place in your life to learn to love yourself."

The film opens on Friday, Januray 24.
