First flu-related death of the season reported in Boston

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Health officials announced a Boston man in his 60s has died as a result of influenza-related complications Friday.

The unidentified man, who had underlying health conditions, is Boston's first flu-related death of the season.

Health officials recommend anyone over the age of six months receive the flu vaccination.

"We'd like to use this as an opportunity to remind people that flu can be a very serious illness," Executive Director of the Boston Public Health Commission Dr. Barbara Ferrer said.

The Boston Public Health Center is offering free flu shot vouchers donated by Walgreens. Interested residents can call the Mayor's Health Line at 617-534-5050 for more information. The vouchers are only redeemable by those over the age of 18.

Officials say that influenza started early this year with a sudden spike in cases just before Christmas.

"We've seen quite an up tick in the flu-like illnesses that have presented themselves and a number of cases that have been positive for the flu test," Dr. Richard Aubry said.
