Girl nearly drowns after falling into septic tank

Posted: Updated:

A little girl who fell into a septic tank and nearly died over the weekend was released from a hospital Monday and headed home.

It's a miraculous turn of events after that accident too place near Maricopa.

Kylie Lafferty wasn't breathing and had no pulse when rescuers pulled her out of a septic tank, but they were able to revive her and the little girl made a startling recovery.

The 22-month-old is a bundle of energy.  It's hard to believe her family almost lost her over the weekend.

"I thought she was dead.  I thought they couldn't bring her back," said Kylie's mother, Emily Howard.

Yet she was cavorting around the lobby of Cardon Children's Medical Center in Mesa.

Little Kylie was with her mom at a swap meet outside Maricopa on Saturday.  She slipped on a lid that covered an underground septic tank, fell through it and vanished.

"I dropped to my knees and I tried to grab her.. the water was too deep.. I started screaming please get her out," said Emily.

People nearby raced over to rescue the little girl.

"So I just immediately went in.. my phone got wet, I didn't care about that.. just went in to see what I could do," said Henry Ricketts.

"When they pulled her out, she wasn't breathing and I was screaming, please save her.  Please save her," said Emily.

A woman in the crowd used CPR and after a weekend in the hospital, Kylie was released.

"She is playful and amazing and sweet and bratty and I love her.  I love everything about her.. she is tough, nothing can stop her now from what she wants to do," said Emily.

Kylie appears to be mentally alert, but she will have some ongoing health concerns.  Doctors will monitor her, looking for any signs of asthma, hepatitis or infections caused by the fall into the sewage in the septic tank.
