Posted: Updated:

OXFORD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 26-year-old driver sustained life-threatening injuries Monday when he was hit by a tractor-trailer after crawling out of his overturned pick-up truck.

Mass. State Police responded to the serious crash involving three vehicles on Route 90 eastbound in Oxford just after 4:30 a.m.

Initial reports suggest the driver of the pick-up truck, a 26-year-old Brookline man, was driving east when, for an unknown reason, he left the road and crashed into the median. His truck then rolled and came to a rest in the center lane.

The man and his 25-year-old passenger were not seriously injured at the time and managed to exit the pick-up. After crawling out of the truck, the driver was standing in the roadway and was hit by a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer also hit the pick-up and a sedan that just passed the scene.

The 26-year-old driver of the sedan and their 27-year-old passenger sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries. They were transported to UMass Medical Center along with the occupants of the pick-up truck.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 26-year-old Rhode Island man, was flown via medical helicopter to UMass Medical Center with serious injuries.

Mass. State Police continue to investigate a cause of the crash.
