LIVONIA, Mich. (WJBK) -- Crews were able to contain a large warehouse fire Wednesday morning that created smoke visible for miles.

Livonia police say flames and thick black smoke poured out of a building housing ERG Environmental on the 13000 block of Merriman Road. Police say the warehouse contained petroleum-based paint.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Hazardous materials crews responded and officials plan to check the air around the site. Livonia Fire Chief Shadd Whitehead says firefighters want to ensure any contamination doesn't get into the ground or water.

No injuries were reported.

FOX 2 has left messages with ERG Environmental officials for comment.

The fire forced the closure of Merriman between Plymouth and Schoolcraft.
