Lansing braces for Gov. Snyder's State of the State address

Once a year the Governor gets to talk directly to the state of Michigan to lay out his agenda for the new year, but Democrats are hoping this is the last time they hear a State of the State address from Rick Snyder.

"It's not a secret hope - it's actually an expectation," says the Democratic candidate for the next governor Mark Schauer.

Gov. Snyder and the first family move into this election year and, while this is billed as a policy address, everything the governors says tonight will have political implications. So when he suggests Michigan is the comeback state, Democrats will try to take the glow off of that.

"Our college attainment is down; our poverty is up; infant mortality is up; the real indicators of how people are affected are not good," says Senator Gretchen Whitmer.

"If you look at where the governor started three years ago and where we are today, there is room for optimism but we're not done yet," says Senator Randy Richardville.

Schauer believes Snyder's "one tough nerd" image is not working for common folks.

"He's been tough on kids; he's been tough on retirees; he's been tough on middle class families; he's been tough on our economy - period," Schauer says.

The Governor will boast Thursday night on the state's surplus - $970 million.
