Suspect in violent Boston carjacking held on $50K bail

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -– A Woburn man accused of committing a violent carjacking in Boston was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail Friday.

Joel Cartagena's attorney said their client had been in Methadone treatment for nearly a year. They requested $10,000 cash bail, but the judge ultimately ordered the $50,000 cash bail requested by prosecutors.

Cartagena was arrested Thursday after police say he crashed his alleged victim's car into the back of a van on West Dedham Street. The 36-year-old faces charges of kidnapping, assault and battery and carjacking.

Police said a woman was getting into her car on Waltham Street at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday when she was approached by a man who pushed her into the car, got behind the wheel, and took off with her inside.

The suspect, who police identify as Cartagena, reportedly held the victim down with one hand and drove with the other. He ended up on West Dedham Street where he crashed. The 36-year-old then got out of the car and ran up the street.

Investigators said witnesses began to chase Cartagena after they saw the victim get out of the car and say, "He stole my car. He tried to mug me." An officer saw Cartagena running and began to chase him down. Witnesses helped to capture him.

Prosecutors in court Friday said the victim, a medical student from Florida, later identified Cartagena as her attacker. She was able to escape into a nearby restaurant after the crash.

"Everything happened really fast, we calmed her down, we gave her water and had her sit down," Nivia Pena, owner of the restaurant said.

Witnesses said the victim suffered a bloody nose when the airbags deployed. She was taken to Boston Medical Center for evaluation, but police said she was not injured.
