Movie Critic Matt Atchity: Good & Bad At The Movies

Posted: Updated:

There's something for everyone at the movies this weekend. A new Jack Ryan, a talking squirrel, the devil's baby, and all of the big Oscar movies. Matt Atchity says only one of the new releases is worth your time: Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

"The critics do like it. They're not overwhelming in their support...But I had a good time. The movie starts off really promising, it drops the ball a little bit at the end but it's really a fun time."

A comedy that's UNDER-whelming critics is the Kevin Hart/Ice Cube flick "Ride Along". Matt says he was looking forward to seeing it but was disappointed.

"I really wanted to like this movie...The jokes just aren't there. I saw it in the theater full of people...The audience wasn't laughing very much and it was frustrating."

For kids and parents who don't want to see "Frozen" for the millionth time, there's a new toon in town: "The Nut Job". Matt says if you have a choice, make it a million and one with "Frozen".

"This is based on an animated short that's been stretched out into a feature length film and that wears a little bit thin...the main character the critics say is very unlikeable...and it's hard to get past that and critics really dislike this film."

"The Devil's Due" is getting attention for an online prank that went viral: it features a demon baby in a stroller that pops up and scares unsuspecting people walking by. Matt says that would have made a better movie than what's on screen.

"It's the found footage version of 'Rosemary's Baby' almost. The critics mostly agree that the marketing stunt is more interesting than the movie itself."

Matt also says there are plenty of Oscar nominated movies out there and gives his pick for the one he says is most worth your time.

Matt Atchity is the editor in chief for the pop-culture website "Rotten Tomatoes." He also hosts a new show on Sirius XM called "Rotten Tomatoes Radio."
