ARLINGTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Shots were fired following a bank robbery in Arlington Friday afternoon.
Police said two men robbed a Leader Bank location on Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington. Officers chased the men to a neighborhood near Brooks Avenue where shots were fired.
One of the suspects, James P. Riley, 36, was hit and taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries. The other suspect, Shawn T. Bambushew, age 25, was not shot and was arrested at the scene. Both were charged with bank robbery and assault by means of a dangerous weapon, to wit brandishing a firearm at police. The case remains under investigation, and additional charges may be filed.
An Arlington police officer was also evaluated at an area hospital. The officer was not shot.
Video from SkyFox showed crime scene investigators had roped off a large area near Brooks Avenue and were looking at a silver Jeep. There were a number of evidence markers on the ground in the area.
A local school had just released for the day when the shooting occurred. No students were hurt.
"Arlington Police Officers bravely chased down these armed suspects, and as one of the suspects brandished a firearm in their direction, those officers were put in fear for their lives," Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said in a release. "I am proud of our officers for making the difficult decision that no police officer ever hopes to be faced with."
Bambushew will be arraigned on Tuesday, but an arraignment date for Riley has not been set.
